It was excitement galore as The Roothub teams arrived at the University of Uyo Town Campus and Eket LGA in Akwa Ibom State, to deliver digital skills training to the students as part of the Tech101 tour – A training program to equip disadvantaged youths in rural areas of Nigeria with relevant digital skills.
Youth unemployment across the country is alarmingly high, especially in oil producing areas of the Niger Delta. Tech 101 provides much needed technology skills to low-income youths, empowering them in today’s digital world and helping them access employment, advance career paths, and drive self-reliance through entrepreneurship. The trainees were treated to an opening session by Tony Onuk, the Co-founder of The Roothub, who reiterated the need for digital skills especially in our dynamic workplace. He had an interactive session with the students in which problem solving methods were explored and highlighted upon as the foundation with which economic growth can be achieved.

The trainees who are a mix of students and business owners, were surprised to learn simple but helpful tips on how they can use Search engine platform, Google to effectively look for what they need. Using the internet was a session anchored by Ogoluwa Ojewale, The CTO of The Roothub and a Software Engineer, who shared the challenges he faced in the University and how they can surmount this challenges with digital skills. The focus was on Google for research and education as well as the Google translator platform.

Eno Alphonsus
Renowned Digital Agency Founder, Eno Alphonsus of Maketa Digital, interacted with the trainees with the focus on how Digital media has shaped her career and is providing a veritable source of income for her and her staff. She was able to proffer solutions to some of the trainees problems practically as she focused on those willing to start a business yet restricted by economic challenges. The students were appreciative of the training and thanked the organizers for bringing it to their doorstep. In particular, the efforts of the Vice President of the Students Union Government, who facilitated the training program was appreciated. Some of the students interviewed were optimistic of the impact this training would have on them and their businesses.
